Resume

Dr. Huang Shiqiang is the Principal Investigator of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Metabolism Lab at the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
He graduated with an A.B. (highest honors) from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School. He was one of the early pioneers in the field of stem cell metabolism, with a focus on the metabolic changes required for stem cell differentiation and tissue regeneration. In his earlier work, he found that adult mammals, including humans, possess a dormant gene that promotes the juvenile state, Lin28. This stem cell factor can regulate mitochondrial metabolism in a unique fashion to promote regeneration in a variety of damaged tissues. The results were published in Cell (2013), and reported by many mainstream media outlets globally. In 2016, Dr. Huang Shiqiang’s team achieved another breakthrough in the study of muscle stem cell metabolism and exploiting its therapeutic window to treat muscle wasting disorders. These results were published in Nature Medicine as the cover story, and attracted media attention internationally. His findings have also been published in Science, Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Cell Metabolism, Cell Reports, Genes Dev, Development and other journals.

Our research group is devoted to studying the mechanism of muscle aging and regeneration. Using skeletal muscle and other tissues as research models, we have carried out a series of stem cell metabolomics analyses to explore how to use fundamental metabolic principles to regulate cell fate. (1) To study how stem cell metabolism affects stem cell differentiation in tissue regeneration, we are using small molecules to induce human pluripotent stem cells to differentiate into muscle fibers. (2) To study the mechanisms of muscle wasting during aging, we are using human skeletal muscle fibers to model human muscle atrophy, and study the mechanisms of how different inflammatory cytokines and growth factors cause muscle wasting. We are committed to harnessing stem cell metabolism and regenerative medicine to treat muscle wasting syndromes and improve the quality of life of the elderly, in order to cope with the societal impact of aging.
